Secondary Publication Service of the University Library

What is the secondary publication service?
The University Library's second publication service offers you the opportunity to republish your previously in closed access published scientific works as secondary publications. This makes your works freely accessible, which significantly improves their visibility and accessibility and promotes the dissemination of scientific information.
What are the advantages of secondary publication?
- Greater visibility: Your works will be indexed by academic search engines such as Google Scholar or BASE, enabling them to reach a wider audience and increasing the number of citations.
- Long-term archiving: Your works will be archived on our institutional publication server OPUShtw.
- Compliance with legal requirements: We will help you to ensure compliance with the legal criteria for secondary publication.
How does the service work?
- Notifying the publication: Send us the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) of your publication by email to open-access@htw-berlin.de. This can also be sent as a list.
- Checking the legal basis: We check the legal basis for the secondary publication. This includes checking the information on the allowed version and the embargo period. If you have a contract with the publisher, we will be happy to examine it; in some cases, the contract allows the secondary publication.
- Request to the publisher (if necessary): If there is no legal basis for the secondary publication, you can request individual permission from the publisher. We will be happy to make this request for you.
- Obtaining the allowed version: You acquire the version of your work that is allowed to be published. This guide can be helpful in finding the accepted manuscript version (also ‘AAM’, ‘accepted manuscript’ or ‘final draft’). If necessary, we will help you with the search.
- Obtaining the consent of co-authors and granting your permission: If the publication was written in collaboration with other co-authors, it is necessary that they agree to the secondary publication on OPUShtw. Before publication, a licence agreement will be submitted to you for signing. By signing, you also confirm the consent of the co-authors.
- Uploading to OPUShtw: As soon as we have received the allowed version, we will prepare it for publication and complete its metadata. The paper will then be published on OPUShtw.
What information and documents are required for secondary publication?
To use our self-archiving service, you will need to provide the following information:
- List of your publications: This list should ideally include the DOI of your publications.
- If a publication does not have a DOI: You can also send us a list of bibliographic references in a structured format (e.g. BibTeX, RIS) or your ORCiD.
- Licence agreement: Written permission for secondary publication is required for the texts provided (the licence agreement to be signed is provided by the library).
- Correct version of the publication: Upon request, you will be required to provide the preprint or postprint version (‘accepted manuscript’ or ‘final draft’) of your works.
Note
Some publishers allow the published version to be archived on the institutional repository, while others only allow the accepted manuscript to be published. We are happy to assist you in checking the legal terms.
