What is Research Data?

Research data is (usually digital) data that is created during a scientific activity. It forms the basis of scientific work and documents its results. They are defined differently depending on the subject area or research project.

The German Research Foundation counts the following as research data:

including measurement data, laboratory values, audiovisual information, texts, survey data, objects from collections or samples that are generated, developed or evaluated in the course of scientific work. Methodological test procedures such as questionnaires, software and simulations can also represent central results of scientific research and should therefore also be included under the term research data. It includes strategies, practices and tools that are used to ensure the integrity, availability, traceability and long-term preservation of research data.
